Ahhh. Pregnancy. The time when I glow with an inner beauty, my hair becomes thicker and looks amazing, my skin is simply stunning and I give up on make up as I really don’t need it. Or so no one who’s gone through pregnancy has actually said.

My experience has been more of a second beauty adolescence. A rerun of the mortifying time when your body changed in mysterious ways overnight. Just like then, there are hairs popping up where there weren’t any before, skin rebelling in the strangest places. All of a sudden I need to buy new bras and get used to new body parts but without the bursts of energy, humour and support that got me through it the first time. Instead I find myself valiantly pretending to be completely normal while hoping that my energy devoid body makes it to the coffee machine without being attacked by zombie hunters.

Unlike the teenage years, there is no gradual improvement as you edge towards the ability to order a glass of wine without being judged. The first month after I discovered I was pregnant was a breeze. I just replaced my foundation with tinted moisturiser and HD powder, slipped on some lipstick and natural eyeshadow, light blusher and headed off towards the future/nearest bathroom. By the time I was at 16 weeks along, I was debating whether I could carry off the same paper bag with every outfit. At 19 weeks, I carefully sat in front a mirror and cautiously opened up my drawer of goodies. That first swoop of blusher actually had me bouncing around with happiness and feeling like me again.

It’s no good stubbornly sticking to your prepregnancy routine (unless you’re one of those lucky ladies who fly through pregnancy unaware of what all the fuss is about). Just as we learned to move on from scribbled face paint, cheap shared mascara and painfully unsubtle blue eyeshadow, we have to readjust, relearn what works and what doesn’t. It took me longer than I’d have liked to accept that my amazing foundation was no longer giving me a flawless glowing complexion. Instead my skins changes meant that instead it would either disappear into my pores, vanishing as though I’d not applied a single drop. Or it created creases and sat on top of the skin resulting in that wonderful decaying starlet look. If that sounds familiar, use a primer and try mixing the foundation with a dab of moisturiser/serum before applying it.

So here are my other painfully learned lessons:

  •     Actually use the ‘good intention’ products. The eye & neck creams, the serums and other products you use sporadically (if at all). Estee Lauder’s Night repair should be handed out at the 12 week scan
  •   Really deep clean your skin every night. Massage a cream cleanser in before using hot water and a Muslin cloth to remove (you’ll be surrounded by muslin clothes soon enough. May as well start early).
  •   Clean your make up brushes! And throw away any that are beginning to fall apart
  • · Get a great HD loose powder and brush to buff it into your skin. Simple step that makes a huge difference 2 hours later
  •   Ease up on any black eyeliners in the daytime. Brown, bronze, grey and navy eyeliners are much more flattering.
  •  Spend some love on your eyebrows. Getting them threaded and using a light brow powder/pen will make you look better – even on days where you’re holding onto a bucket and getting queasy at even the mention of food.
  • · Nude Lipstick or Cliniques Cubby pen are my go-to products. Can’t remember the last time I had the energy or the ability to keep bright red lipstick looking perfect all day.
  • A great blusher will keep those zombie hunters at bay.
  •  Oh and a can of dry hairspray for mornings where the shower loses out to the snooze button.  It’s not just for teenagers.

Anyone else got a must have make up tips that saved them during pregnancy or just after? There are people who swear by nipple cream for lip balm so am very much looking forward to discovering what other beauty tips I’ve been missing out on!
